Why is sewage coming up through my shower?

What it tells you

It is a main-line symptom, not a shower problem. Clearing the shower trap will not fix it, and running more water anywhere in the house will make it worse by adding volume behind the blockage.

Common causes, most to least frequent

• Grease, wipes, or debris accumulation in the main line
• Root intrusion at pipe joints, common in older clay or cast-iron lines
• A collapsed or bellied (sagging) section of pipe
• Municipal main surcharge during heavy rain, which pushes back through the lowest connected fixture

How to tell it's the main line and not just the shower

If the toilet, another shower, or a floor drain also gurgles or backs up around the same time, that confirms a main-line blockage. If only the shower is affected and nothing else, a localized drain clog is more likely — though a slow main blockage can still show up at the shower first simply because it sits lowest.

A camera inspection down a cleanout identifies exactly where and why the line is blocked before any clearing method is chosen, which avoids repeat visits for the same cause. Hydro-jetting is typically used for grease and buildup; mechanical cutting or root treatment for intrusion; and pipe repair or lining for a collapsed or bellied section.
